We increasingly encounter QR codes, for example on products in the supermarket, in magazines and on posters. A QR code is a type of barcode. The square squares can be scanned with the camera of a smartphone (or tablet). In this way, people get more information about a product or brand, for example. Think details about nutritional values or recipes. QR codes can also be found in restaurants, allowing customers to view the menu online and place orders. Even on collection boxes for donations you see QR codes these days.
How does a QR code work? A QR code allows people to instantly find useful information on a website. If you see a QR code somewhere, you can scan this black and white square barcode with your smartphone's camera. By tapping on the appeared link, the corresponding website opens instantly.
How to scan a QR code Scan a QR code with an iPhone or Android device as follows:
- Open the Camera app.
- Pretend to take a picture of the QR code and point the camera at the code.
- The QR code appears on the screen. Make sure the entire code is visible.
- A notification appears to open the website behind the QR code. Tap the notification.
Safety
With a QR code, it is not always immediately obvious who is behind it. If the code is on a product package or in a magazine, it is usually trustworthy. But if you receive an e-mail with a QR code, take extra care not to accidentally land on a phishing website. Therefore, always check the URL of the opened website. Phishing websites often have a weird-looking web address.
